Rain, smoothie and sardines.

1. Getting inside just before the rain starts throwing down, filling cups left on the outside tables at the cafe. And everyone turning to watch the sky emptying on us.

2. Yoghurt collecting round the frozen blackberry decorating the top of my smoothie.

3. Finding a tin of sardines and eating them with nubbly bread and some slices of homegrown cucumber.

  1. I've always been curious about sardines, which a friend of mine refers to as "oily dead things." Do you just take them out of the tin and eat them, or are you supposed to cut them up or what?

  2. Oily dead things is a pretty good description of sardines... I always think the tins look like little coffins.

I just take them out of the tin and put them on bread -- I break them up with a fork to stop them rolling off. Some brands have a few bones and scales, but I guess if you shop around, you'll find the best variety.

Sometimes I get fresh sardines, too. They are bigger than the tinned sort, and not cooked, obviously. I grill them, and they go well with tomatoes.

They always make me think of suppertime, so they are rather comforting. Also I like the way the tins stack up in the cupboard.
