Demons, heroes and peers of the realm.

1. For some reason, I never like the finishing part of a piece of needlework. If I am not careful I end up with sad pieces of cross-stitch waiting to be framed or made-up into bookmarks and glasses cases and whatever. Today I forced myself to assemble the stumpwork of flowers and a butterfly that I have been labouring over. It was satisfying to know I've overcome a difficult part of myself. It doesn't look as good as the picture on the box -- to be honest there's something wrong with the scale, and one of the butterfly's wings is too big. But I've made it, damn it, and I'm going to march into the framing shop and ask for the best shadow box they've got. Well, maybe the best priced shadow box.

You will never have Peter. He is Jane's.

  2. 1. As the conductor raises his baton and the packed house holds its breath, in the hush, the icicle tinkle of curtain rings as the heavy ruby red velvet curtain goes up at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.

    2. The triumphant expression on ballerinas' faces and the flick of their wrists into an arabesque when they are lifted up high on the male dancer's shoulders at the end of the pas de deux.

    3. Dark pink roses the size of side plates scrambling over the arch at the front gate.

  3. 1.The reappearance of the sun after a long absence.

    2. Googling a neighbour & discovering they are a talented artist who has exhibited all over the world, including at the Royal Academy in London. She is currently has exhibitions in San Francisco & Costa Rica. This explains why people kept asking her how her painting was going at my aunt's garden party two days ago. After viewing her website, my favourite painting is 'Slug Garden', because of the way her big, brash painting style enlarges the tiny detail one would normally miss whilst gardening.

  4. It so tickled me when you said, "but I've made it, damn it" oh, I just threw my head back and LOL..heartily,and all because I hook rugs, and feel much the same way when it comes time to finish the binding and backing! Oh, what a chore! All that sewing and measuring and cutting and glueing, for something that will never be seen! Yours, at least will be seen and appreciated in that new shadow box!

  7. There was another BT from yesterday. In Covent Garden I got a call from PaulV asking if I wanted to go for a run. [A run??? Good grief.] I said I was still in London and going to the ballet. 'Humph,' he said, 'well, I've got tickets for Tricia.'

  10. I lent you the graphic novel -- I've still got the novel up here, and I finished reading it on Sunday. It's really very good -- it's got lots more plot than the graphic novel; but far less pictures!

Glad you liked the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Do you have the second volume, too?

  11. Philip, aren't you attached? However, I recommend Mina Murray in League of Extraordinary Gentlemen; or what about Jo March in Little Women? Or there's always Mary Poppins -- if you can wrest her away from Bert the Sweep and the Matchman... If I think of any others, I'll let you know.
